Rich Williams shared with UCR that Kansas couldn’t refuse after The Rolling Stones offered them to open several stadium shows. During their show in Boulder, Colorado, Rich stood side stage to watch the Stones play next to Jaggers’ then-girlfriend Jerry Hall. However, the rocker revealed that he was terrified as he explained:
“I was terrified to say anything to her. What I really wanted to do, and never did, was take pictures of her feet. She’s, like, 6’1 – a model, stunning – and she had the longest, skinniest feet I’d ever seen. I just kept thinking, ‘My God, look at those feet!’ I just wanted to take a little snapshot of them, but I thought if she caught me, the Stones crew would have me thrown off the back of the stage, so I chickened out.”
Just before the show started, Rich recalled Jagger and Richards coming to their dressing room to chat. Williams dived into what went on that night and said:
“I’m warming up, and people are just doing whatever, and all of a sudden, Mick [Jagger] and Keith [Richards] just walk into our dressing room. ‘Hello, guys. Nice to have you on the show. Love your band. Let us know if there’s anything you need …’ That’s the only time I’ve ever been starstruck. I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t make words. They were such gentlemen. It was very cool.”
Even though Kansas were on a roll with their back-to-back Top 5 albums and they could have been headliners, opening for Rolling Stones was a big deal for Rich and the rest of Kansas as he said to UCR:
“They were one of our heroes. You can’t turn down an opportunity like that.”
